Maia Ramnath wears many hats: aerialist, dancer, choreographer, writer, teacher, historian and NYC tour guide.  As a freelance performer Maia has worked with many dance and circus artists including Pat Catterson & Dancers, Molissa Fenley, Fly By Night Aerial Dance Theater, Yonder Window Theater Company, Hybrid Movement Company, the Neopolitical Cowgirls, Lisa Natoli, Elise Knudson & Bianca Falco, Sarah Wollschlager’s Surface to Air Dance, and the Merce Cunningham Repertory Understudy Group.  Since 2009, Maia has been creating multi-disciplinary aerial-dance-theater-video assemblages as co-founder/director of Constellation Moving Company (collective projects)/Constellation Moving (solo work), which have been presented at venues including Theater for the New City, Dixon Place, The Muse (artist in residency program), and the Dzul International Dance Festival in Campeche, Mexico.  Maia has taught aerial rope and silks in NYC at Vital Climbing Gym, The Muse, and Circus Warehouse; world history and South Asian history at NYU, Penn State and Fordham University.  Holding a PhD in History, a BFA in Dance, and an MA in Interdisciplinary Humanities and Social Thought, Maia is the author of three books and numerous articles on anti-colonialism and transnational radical social movements.  The various facets of Maia’s current projects are an attempt to bring all these aspects of life and work comprehensively together through choreography, writing, and political engagement.  Maia is a fan of running, sci fi/fantasy, pirates, and ice cream, and predicts that martial arts and music will make a comeback after the next Saturn return.
